I think we should be designing for the majority use case here, and I believe that is to have new music automatically show up in Rhythmbox. I only have anecdotal evidence here, but I've never had any problems this feature on my single core laptop. I also don't think that "well it should run on netbooks" is a valid argument since I believe (anecdotal again) that they're mostly used by geeks and average users are using larger and more powerful computers.
