I just tried to reproduce this in Quantal by defining "iface eth0:1" in
/etc/network/interfaces, setting "managed=false", restarting network-
manager, bringing up eth0:1 with "ifup eth0:1". Everything was
configured as I would expect. In particular, NM did not bring up eth0:1
and eth0:1's address was not used as a default gateway address.

Title:
Network Manager does not handle properly interface labels
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
Binary package hint: network-manager
(On ubuntu intrepid)
I have a pseudo eth0 interface eth0:1
(the purpose is to leave normal dhcp configuration to network manager, but
when i plug a cable to my server rather than a router, i can use 192.168.42.*
as a subnetwork without having to use a dhcp server).
Numenor ~ $ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0:1
iface eth0:1 inet static
pre-up ifconfig eth0 up
address 192.168.42.3
network 192.168.42.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.42.255
According to
Numenor ~ $ cat /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
[ifupdown]
managed=false
the interface eth0:1 should be unmanaged by NetworkManager.
However:
1) if i plug down the ethernet cable, eth0:1 is brought down along with eth0
2) if i plug the cable to my server and use wifi to connect to the web via my
router, NetworkManager use the address 192.168.42.3 (my pseudointerface) as
it's default gateway rather than to use the gateway provided by the wifi. I
know that wired takes precedence over wireless, but eth0:1 should be unmanaged
and doesn't provide any default gateway anyway.
