The current workspace switcher in the Unity launcher does not give any 
information about the current workspace and therefore I you have to click on it 
(or Super+S) to open the spread feature in order to know which workspace I were 
in.

Workspace switcher panel applet in Gnome 2.x used to show which
workspace you were working in.

In order to implement it, a simple four square icon with four different
states (active square with white background, for the sake of
simplicity), each corresponding to each of the four workspaces. For any
other number of workspaces different icons would be necessary.
