3) Start the program, select the "Tools" menu, "Viewing Controls" and then 
start "Side View".
A small window appears, showing the side view of your current molecular 
modelling project.


4) A small (but empty) window appears, then dissappears together with the whole 
application.


FYI: This started as a bug report for UCSF Chimera, but seems to be 
reproducible with Intel
drivers on other Ubuntu 12.10 systems as well:
