Title:
gnome-panel using over half of my memory, all apps slow.

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After doing the command "ps -aux" I can see that gnome-panel is using
56% of %MEM. This is reflected by the fact that it takes about 10-15
seconds to open a terminal window (click on shortcut to prompt being
ready) and long times to open other apps as well.

  Description: Ubuntu 11.10
  Release: 11.10

  synaptic 0.75.2ubuntu7

  I am using gnome3-fallback.

What I expect to happen: That a terminal window should open in a
second or so, and other apps should follow (roughly) similar
  performance.

What actually happens: Terminal windows open in 10-15 seconds time,
file browsers take over half a minute to become fully functional, and
  other such performance issues.

I am running xfce on ubuntu 11.04 on a pc that has exactly the same
specs as this one, and the performance is much better than it is here.
This is really becoming a big issue and extremely annoying.
