According to french community documentation page (http://doc.ubuntu- fr.org/rhythmbox#la_barre_d_espace_ne_fonctionne_pas_pour_la_recherche), another workardound is to switch the default french keyboard map ("français - variante") to another ("french"). It's known to work but it changes map for a lot of keys.
