When i do the merge and center cells button is greyed out and i cannot select it. However if i use shift and arrow to mark the same cells the button becomes available. It also works if i mark a larger range of rows it sometimes works. Do not know if it is in any way relevant but i have used a smaller font in the cells 6pt.
