This worked for me:
echo "debconf debconf/priority select critical
lightdm shared/default-x-display-manager select gdm
gdm shared/default-x-display-manager select lightdm" | debconf-set-selections
You will likely want to set the debconf priority back to high when
you're done.
I'm closing this bug as I don't think this is a bug in the gdm
packaging.

Bug description:
When installing gdm 3.0.4-0ubuntu15 on a 12.04 system via aptitude, I
get prompted as to which dm I want to use, even if I have already set
the appropriate debconf values before attempting the install.
Steps to reproduce:
echo "gdm shared/default-x-display-manager select lightdm"
|debconf-set-selections
aptitude -y install gdm
