unity launcher and title do not appear

Bug description:
Everything worked fine until this morning.
The PC boots up normally and I can log into the system using lightdm-greeter
after which I end up seeing nothing but my wallpaper.
right clicking works fine and I am also able to open up a terminal by using
ctr.+ alt +t.
I tried to reset unity by doing
