In the /var/log/syslog file i get: gdm[3192]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 Some discussion on similar same problem is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=96068 I am running 7.04 amd64. To me it seems like either an out of memory thing, firefox might be a possible cause, but it is still hard to say. There are a bunch of somewhat similar, but I think different bugs. For example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/138708 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/136784 The difference is that these other one deal with 3D stuff and commonly the problem is with nvidia or the nv driver. I am not using any effects (such as compiz etc. on this box). relevant lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 [Radeon X300SE] I have ran this system without an X crash for a long time. I will continue to post other error logs etc. as I can think of things that might be helpful to fix this. ---- Also, it is not reproducible reliably. For example twice in a row when clicking on this link: http://krazydad.com/blog/ from this link: http://battellemedia.com/archives/003952.php in the comments section, i got the crash. But the third time i clicked on the link (yeah, you would think i would have learned) it didn't crash. So it is not completely reproducible. For me, I have uninstalled gnash. And since then I haven't seen a crash.
