So it appears that the backend process "aptdaemon" has failed for some
reason. Do you got any further error error messages or anything in
/var/crash/ ? Could you please attach the "syslog" file? Maybe that
contains some clues.

Title:
Software Center password and install operation working sporadically

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Xubuntu / xfce - 12.10 amd64
New install a few days ago.

Software Centre has been exhibiting a variety of troubling behaviours.
The primary problem is that it has trouble accepting a password after
  asking for it.

Being a password / update problem, I think this should be flagged as a
security issue. But since I cannot say for sure that it is, I cannot
check "This bug is a security vulnerability" in the flag below.
Perhaps there should be another flag for things that should be treated
  as security risks?

The bug: Sometimes when you press install nothing happens. Sometimes
it asks for a password and the password window drops out in the middle
of typing. Sometimes, after inputing the password, the window
disappears and then nothing appears to happen. Sometimes when the
Software Centre is installing some unidentified window flashes up and
off in the background, like some neon light attached to something
that's barely working. Sometimes the software appears not to have
installed, and then the install progress bar springs to life at about
the half-way mark. It's consistently inconsistent in the style of its
operation. It does actually install software successfully. But it is
worrying and gives the impression it cannot be trusted. It is slow and
  jumpy.

One example of a recent install attempt:

  Me: Press <install>
  Software centre: Asks for password.
  Me: Enter password
  Software Centre: Nothing happens.
  Me: Press <install> again
  Software Centre: Asks for password.
  Me: Type password
Software Centre: Drops out before password typed out completely
  Me: Press <install>
  Software Centre: Asks for password.
  Me: Enter password
Software Centre: Waits just long enough to be disconcerting, then installs
software

Another install a short while later was accompanied by a ghost window
that flashed on and off in the background. This has happened a number
  of times.

I would wager that there's a spanner in the works. That's my technical
diagnosis. It seems to both get snarled up and fail to update the
  display.
