just a try, run:
synclient -l | grep -i "TouchpadOff"
from treminal, and if it returned:
TouchpadOff = 1
then your touchpad is disabled, just enable it by running:
synclient TouchpadOff=0

Steps to reproduce:
1. Try the Ubuntu 12.04 live - UltraNav is not working (neither the touchpad,
nor trackpoint)
2. Install and update Ubuntu 12.04 - UltraNav is not working (neither the
touchpad, nor trackpoint)
3. While debugging, it seems the device is detected, it just doesn't work.
External USB mouse works just fine.
