X startup fails with "failed to get resources" error after update to
3.5.0-18

Bug description:
The system was working correctly at 3.5.0-17. After upgrade to
3.5.0-18 the system lost screen display on boot. Booting with
"nomodeset" had no effect.
I could log in remotely and see lightdm was NOT running, and from
Xorg.0.log that X failed to start.
