Seen on natty & precise (not tested on others), on natty modprobe-cycled the driver to workaround the issue, on precise "pasuspender alsactl init" seems to be enough to get the driver play sanely again. Easiest way so far to reproduce this seems to be running speech- dispatcher (started by launching mumble & quitting it) and firefox with html5 youtube at same time, playing some video with speech-only content where distortions are easiest to notice and seeking that forward and backward 10-20 times. Might be related to concurrently running applications with different sampling rates and making them interrupt playback at "inconvenient" times from the driver's point of view.
