I use 12.04 LTS and the pointer also hides sometimes while accessing the dashboard applications .

But when it is moved the pointer becomes visible for a second and hides again. Not only the appearance menu but also the system setting option. Whenever the pointer is at rest at an option the pointer becomes invisible. This makes Ubuntu a tough thing to learn for a new user who has only used the Windows.
