I had a similar problem simple scan couldn't find my HP Officejet Pro 8500 network printer/scanner, but only sees my locally attached USB webcam. I installed hplip-gui and it didn't recognize my printer. I manually added it via it's IP address and now simple scan recognizes my printer. Thanks!!

Xsane finds it without issues on my karmic desktop; my lucid laptop can't seem to locate it, even though both are on the same network. I can't tell if there's some way to get simple- scan to manually poll the network; the output of simple-scan -d is simply: $ simple-scan -d ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: Starting Simple Scan 0.9.9, PID=24891 ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: Restoring window to 600x400 pixels ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: sane_init () -> SANE_STATUS_GOOD ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: SANE version 1.0.20 ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: Requesting redetection of scan devices ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: Processing request ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: sane_get_devices () -> SANE_STATUS_GOOD ** (simple-scan:24891): DEBUG: Device: name="v4l:/dev/video0" vendor="Noname" model="Integrated Camera" type="virtual device" anything i can do to debug?
