The dongle supplied with the Zenbook Prime (UX31A) is a mini-VGA to VGA cable, no HDMI involved. I haven't tried hooking up an external monitor with stock Quantal, but with the xorg-edgers PPA, I have found no problems hooking up a monitor with said dongle.
