In 12.04 it worked fine.
gconftool -R /apps/metacity/general

num_workspaces = 6
capture_before_unmap = true
visual_bell_type = frame_flash
disable_workarounds = false
titlebar_font = Arial 11

show_maximized_titlebars = false
