This is fixed in newer versions of Ubuntu for Toshiba Satellite L650.
Verified working for version 12.10.

  sound through speakers even though headphones are connected, no sound
  on headphones

Bug description:
  i've bought this computer a few weeks ago.
  i installed ubuntu from a cd image, that i downloaded from the site
  however, like my old computer, there is a problem with the sound device
  i can't seem to get any sound on my headphones! but worst, it doesn't even 
cut the speakers when i plug the headphones in...
  my computer is a toshiba satellite l650-18c.
  i'm new to all this, so if you can help, explain it as if i were a child :S
