I wish I could help more specifically, but as a general idea, you may want to look at: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1520873/ (Note: although the VIA module is not listed explicitly, it also uses ac97_quirk)
You make the changes in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. For example, you might add the line: options snd-via82xx ac97_quirk=swap_surround You'll need to restart alsa for changes to take effect: sudo alsa reload -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1098674 Title: [VIA8233 - VIA 8235, playback] No sound at all Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I've seen so many reports of problems with this chipset (many of which were invalid; muted chnls, incorrect connections etc), I'm hesitant to report this as a bug. However, I've tried everything I can think of (and solutions suggested elsewhere online) with no luck. I initially had problems with Pulse, but on digging further it seems this problem is due to ALSA. The device is detected, audio applications (for example mpg123) play audio happily - there's just zero output from the back audio port on the motherboard. The mic and line-in ports work as expected (for example, fldigi receives audio and plot it on the waterfall). I've tried all combinations of chnl mutes, volumes etc in alsamixer. I've also tried 'external amplifier' both on and off (many reports suggest this as a fix). Zero difference.
