this stopped happening to me for a while, but now it is happening to me a lot

I notice there was a unity update recently, coincidence?

  entire firefox window is a black rectangle

Bug description:
  Browser was working. Performed a system update, informed I need to
  restart browser. Restart browser, but it crashes instead (or at least
  doesn't restart.) Start browser; all windows are filled with black
  whether full screen or not. Disabling visuals in compiz is no help.
  Had to install another browser to file this report.
