I'm seeing this exact behavior Ubuntu 12.04 also ... my particular setup is patch current as of 1/14/13 ... alacarte 0.13.2-2ubuntu4, on Ubuntu x86_64 12.04, Kernel 3.2.0-35.55-generic 3.2.34
