Title:
[VIA VT1828S] ALSA test tone not correctly played back over front
  headphone jack

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have no audio playback via the front facing headphones. There is a
small click on bootup, but no noise out of the headphone jack
otherwise. I tried unplugging and replugging.

Sound works on the rear panel of my desktop computer. It's the Asus P7P55D LE
P55 R motherboard.
I tried removing and reinstalling all pulse-audio synaptics packages and all
alsa packages (except libraries which seem to remove everything)
  I tried installing
http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-intel-hda-diwic-via-automute-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb
 as per the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/607482. But it
didn't change anything.

  Possibly in the alsa-driver.
