Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. do a default install of ubuntu 12.10
2. log in (note that you need to enter your password
3. open User Accounts
4. click "password"
5. set action to "Log in without a password" - NOT "auto login" which does
something different.
6. ok the dialog, log out, restart computer.

This action clears the user's password. Their password is now
effectively null.

7. When you reach the greeter once again, you have to click on "login"
but you will not be asked for a password.

At this point it is not possible to give yourself a password again due to
another bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1070449
So we work around it:

8. open a terminal and "passwd"
9. Note it doesn't ask for your existing password, because there isn't one.
Enter a new password.
10. restart the computer once more.

When you reach the greeter you can login without entering the password
you just set.
