Another data point: 
In Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> HTML Messages, checking the ''Never load 
images from the Internet" options solves the problem for me.  The "Unknown 
background operation" status notifications go away when I do this. 

This leads me to believe that the bug is related to webkit html mail
display fetching images gone awry.

This still happens with the update to Quantal's evolution of today (Jan
18).
