Setting Gnome Mplayer to be the default video player doesn't do anything. Videos are still open in Totem when double-clicked.

For instance, I set "VLC media player" as the default for "Video" but when I double-click on any video file it gets opened by Totem instead. Also the option "A Wine application", shown if Wine is installed, does nothing.
