I see these same symptoms on my macbook air 5,2. I've tried two different (24" and 23") Dell DVI monitors without success. For me, the external monitor usually goes red when I plug it in the second time. Sometimes this hangs the whole machine, sometimes not. In either case the only way to get the external monitor to work again is to reboot.
I've tried the Xorg edgers PPA with no improvement to this problem. I would love to see a fix for this, everything else works so well with the MBA. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1088547 Title: External display is black after hot plug switching to it on Macbook Air 4,2 Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have a Macbook Air 4,2 which I use with an Apple Cinema display. In a dual display set-up, everything works as expected. If I disable the laptop display, the external display continues to work (expected behavior). If I then unplug the external display, the laptop display is automatically re-enabled and works as expected. The problem is, if I then plug the external display back in, both displays go black. I expect the laptop display to go black (disabled), because that was the last setting. However, I do not expect the external monitor to be black. In this state, if I reboot without the external display plugged in, the laptop display turns on and works as expected. However, if I then plug in the external display, both displays go black. If I re-boot and have the external display plugged in, I see the welcome screen but after logging in, the laptop display is black and the external display is blank, but with a blue hue. To recreate: 1. Install Ubuntu on a Macbook Air 4,2 2. Plug in an external monitor 3. In the display settings, enable the external monitor, and disable the laptop monitor 4. Unplug the external display 5. Plug the external display back in I have had this problem with the last few Ubuntu releases. Prior to that, there were more serious problems with dual displays so I did not test for this problem. I am not certain this is an xorg bug, that is just where the bug reporting questionnaire pointed me.
