Spoke too soon. Looks like the right click function still doesn't work, otherwise it works much better. This is true in 12.04 and also in 12.10 before I stopped using that version. Will try to install 13.04 soon and see how it works there.
I think this particular touchpad is common in many laptops, so it would be a good idea to get it working properly.
