Luke, neither of those commands gave me any output at all from the terminal.
Dave, Does this mean that my computer actually has two sets of speakers,
meaning I may not have assembled the computer correctly? I tried to update my
BIOS, but Poenix's website isn't Ubuntu-friendly when it comes to downloading
BIOS updates. I hhave a PhoenixBIOS version F.2F, and there isn't a place to
enable/disable sound that I can find.
Raymond, would I have that same soundcard?

I am using Ubuntu 12.10 on an hp dv6700 laptop. There is absolutely
no sound. I only have a "dummy output" listed in the sound menu.
This is after a complete disassemble of the laptop in which I replaced
the hard drive. I then did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 on the
laptop. The only reason that I think that the problem isn't with the
way I put the laptop back together is that I CAN hear sound when I
enter the BIOS and press keys to make a BEEP sound.
