I did the following

sudo service lightdm stop
wait 2 days
sudo service lightdm start

After this, the sound did not work. Restarting pulseaudio did not work. It was 
a problem with alsa.
When playing a video or audio with mplayer, the position stays at 0:00.
Playing videos with flash skips the content without playing the sound.
