Practically all PostScript interpreters out there either include the 13 standard fonts
- Times (Roman, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic) - Helvetica (Regular, Oblique, Bold, Bold Oblique) - Courier (Regular, Oblique, Bold, Bold Oblique) - Symbol (listed in Appendix E of the PostScript Language Reference Manual) or are automatically able to map these to equivalent and compatible alternative fonts. This has been common practice for nearly three decades now. So I think it is inappropriate for dvips to attempt to map one the above 13 standard PostScript fonts, or complain about there use. This is clearly the job of the PostScript interpreter later in the pipeline. So this bug report is in my opinion very clearly an issue with dvips, not a bug with R (or with any of the other thousands of EPS-generating tools out there that rely on the recipient to know the standard PostScript).
