Can you successfully suspend & resume the machine? Also, if you can ssh
in while it's doing that, check what dmesg says. This sounds a bit like
bug 1085751.

Bug description:
1. Start up into Ubuntu.
2. Log in to a normal account.
3. From the system menu, choose "Guest Session".
What happens:
1. Ubuntu starts up correctly.
2. The login screen and Ubuntu session work fine.
3. The screen goes black for about 30 seconds.
4. The screen flickers wildly, alternating between colored static and a
freeze frame of the Ubuntu session with the system menu open.
