Not enough information, the description sounds like nomodeset, so
assuming it is.

Title:
Video resolution problems, Intel Mobile 4 Chipset
Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
While this machine is capable of much more I have not been able to get
the video resolution to operate at greater than 1280x800 (16:10). 2D
and 3D capabilities do not exist. (basically the video sucks).
I know that the pci-ids for the video are 2a42 and 2a43 but it does
not appear to be picking it up and only uses the generic VGA driver. I
have kept up with the latest kernel updates and did switch over to the
PAE version (I know, 32 bits... it is what I had on the rescue disk at
the time)
Some of the fixes appear to involve changes to the backlight levels.
Right now the machine comes up and [function] up/down arrows work fine
for screen backlight control. Can this "bug" (undocumented feature)
make it onto the list for a fix to properly detect the on-board video
and resolution capabilities? I wish this machine had an NVIDIA but
wishing is not going to put real video on this machine.
