It's an inherent limitation of your hardware that Unity is unable to
cope with, but non-GL based compositors or a vanilla desktop were.

Title:
  [i945gm] Multiple monitors not supported

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

I am using an IBM Thinkpad R60 with Intel Integrated Graphics. Upon
plugging in my second monitor (LCD TV), both my laptop's monitor and
the TV go black... the mouse can be seen on the left side of the TV
(to the right of my laptop's monitor)... but I cannot move the mouse.

If I boot Ubuntu 9.10 with the monitor already plugged in, the
'Mirror' functionality works, but when I go to System > Preferences >
Display, both screens turn black (exactly the same as when I plug in
  the second monitor).

I was able to use my second monitor as an extension of my current
desktop with 9.04 with only small bugs here and there.
