The issue is that you have a rogue modeset in there (by gdm) that
creates a desktop larger than your screen. The login prompt is then
offscreen!

Testing a clean install (real machine - no VMWare or virtualbox) on a
Dell Latitude E-5500 sometimes Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 boots just into a
blank background image without displaying bottom menus and login
dialog/menu.
Somehow sounds similar to

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/436530 but those
are old bugs.
Unfortunately I can't reproduce the problem each time.
