I performed a clean install of Precise (Ubuntu, not XUbuntu) then installed xfce4. The font rendering of Thunderbird is incorrect in XFCE, but fine in Unity. The problem seems to be that the the sub- pixel antialiasing has the wrong pixel order, so font edges are off- colour.
