I have tested with mesa 9.1 from x-staging ppa, and this does resolve the issue

It is not possible to load gdm, gnome-shell etc. This is caused by a certain GL extension, that is enabled but not availble in the vmwgfx driver. There are patches in the upstream bug to fix this.
