Ok, so I have confirmed that this issue does not exist in the generic linux version of LibreOffice but is still present in the LibreOffice 4.0.1 availiable in the PPA. Not sure how to this gets fixed for the Ubuntu community at large as the problem has been resolved upstream but persists in the Ubuntu version.
