You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Holding super key shows numbers on each app icon of the launcher.
In Ubuntu 13.04 daily builds this number for the last application doesn't show
up and doesn't work as well (see the screenshot attached).
This never occurs for locked apps. And becomes right when another not-locked
application is just closed.
I've seen this problem doesn't occur with GIMP which opens more than one
window simultaneously.
