I reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel but unfortunately as the screen freezes I am unable to use apport-collect start after the crash. I have however got the Xorg.0.log.old which looks like it shows the problem. I'll attach it, hope it helps.

I assume that the video driver now being used is VESA? Reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel. Rebooted and then logged into KDE. Problem with screen freezing returned.
