I just confirmed the behavior with latest patched kernel 2.6.38-11-generic. First attempt at mainline kernel version 3.1 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ failed to get me a real X session. I'll try the mainline version matching 2.6.38, but there are various versions. Can you suggest which one would be best suited to validate the mainline kernel?

However, in order to actually get the system to power down after hibernate is done writing state to disk I must hold the power button on the laptop until the computer shuts off. That is, I wait until the HDD notification light has stopped blinking and power down manually. When I turn the comp. back on, hibernate resumes without a hitch.
