I have found a workaround that works at least for me. I appended "vga=792 nomodeset" to the kernel arguments, and I provided an /etc/X11/xorg.conf specific to my setup. Incidentally, my graphics card is a GeForce4 and not a GeForce3 as stated earlier. For the instance where I was seeing a blank screen with just a cursor, it was sufficient to append "nomodeset" without the vga argument, resulting in a low- resolution console and tty 1-6 screens. For the instance where I was seeing black and white stripes and blocks, it was necessary to provide both vga and nomodeset arguments.

After activating the default "Recommended" nvidia driver the result is:- Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen Login and desktop: Normal Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc, random coloured pixels. Ctrl_Alt+F7, blank for several seconds then a desktop with corrupted (random pixels) untity bar and status bar. Using the mouse to force a repaint returns to a normal desktop. Using the "post-install" driver Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen Login and desktop: Normal Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc, blank screen. Ctrl_Alt+F7, blank for several seconds then a desktop with corrupted (random pixels) untity bar and status bar. Using the mouse to force a repaint returns to a normal desktop. Removing the nvidia drivers (back to nouveau) Boot splash: Black and white blocks across the screen Login and desktop: 1024x768 fuzzy distorted screen.
