Title:
nvidia-current fails to install kernel module after upgrade
Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS, and have two Nvida Quadro NVS 295 graphics
cards, with three Apple Cinema displays.
I've enabled unattended-upgrades, and this morning I rebooted my
machine. After the reboot, only one monitor was working.
According to the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, the kernel module was
absent:
[ 489.570] (II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
[ 489.570] (II) Loading
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so
[ 489.570] (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[ 489.570] compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
[ 489.570] Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[ 489.574] (EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please
check your
[ 489.574] (EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error
messages.
[ 489.574] (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
[ 489.574] (II) Unloading nvidia
[ 489.574] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
According to lsmod, there is no such module installed; modinfo and
modprobe both report module not found.
After much trial and error with google, the solution was to do the following:
1. run jockey-gtk
Note: none of the proprietary drivers were enabled in Jockey's list of
drivers.
2. Select the first one 'NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version
current) [Recommended]'
3. Click on 'activate'
This procedure took a while and eventually hung.
Viewing the /var/log/jockey.log seemed to indicate the procedure had failed.
4. run 'modinfo nvidia_current'
I really didn't expect this to work, but it did!
5. run 'modprobe nvidia_current'
6. restart X
I haven't tried rebooting yet, as I wanted to report the information
while it was still fresh in my mind.
I'm not sure what package this bug should be assigned to: jockey?
nvidia-current? unattended-upgrade? other?
