Problem still exists on brand new amd64 raring. Live boot of .iso any resolutions higher than 1152 the systems settings displays only allows counterclockwise and clockwise. There is no option for normal shown.
After install, same thing. The systems settings gui does not have normal option for any resolution past 1152. As in comments above (thank you): xrandr --output VGA1 --rotate normal works. Also tried setting 1152 in normal, then did systems settings displays set to 1600x900 and the normal option stayed in the drop down, and did work. Note this is an Acer Aspire 1 netbook running amd64 just fine, it's laptop screen is 1024x600 has no problem running external monitor at 1600x900 once "normal" rotation is set.
