This bug has been fix for 2-3 weeks. The bug certainly wasn't in synaptics since I also used mtrack for many months, and it affected the keyboard too. The keyboard and trackpad only worked by switching to console 6 then back to console 7 (which was not easy since the keyboard was not reliably sending they key presses). I think the fix arrived with https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.8.0-13.22

I do not know the cause but I suspect power was lost for a time and the computer went to battery. Maybe a cat walked across my keyboard? The power button will show me the login screen, but keyboard, trackpad, and mouse unusable are then unusable. WORK AROUND The keyboard, trackpad, and mouse are also unusable every time I start my computer. My fix is to switch to console 1, then back to console 7, where I see X flicker and then everything works. Switching is unreliable since I must use the keyboard. If my first action upon seeing the login screen in to switch consoles, X is reset in a second. If I forget, I may take several minutes for my key presses to be noticed, This last crash was very difficult. I could not get the keyboard to work. I unplugged my mouse, then plugged it back in. X flickered and the keyboard started working again. took several minutes to start. This was very odd. I have 13" MacBookAir 4.2 and I expect Unity to complete its setup in about a second. I decided to restart assuming that something else was wrong with the system.
