Display brightness is not adjustable

Bug description:
Fully updated fresh install of 12.04 on Lenovo T510 laptop with the
nvidia graphics card. Standard keyboard (fn+home/end) are responsive
from the gui, but no change occurs. Using the brightness tool in the
settings is also ineffective. Attempted numerous fixes found online
(grub entry, xorg.conf entry, etc.) but no positive effect.
