This is an Ubuntu design decision to allow music to continue to play
unless the music is explicitly stopped or paused or the user clicks
File>Quit.

In Unity you can also click the sound menu in the top right area of the
screen to pause music from Rhythmbox.

Title:
Rhythmbox continues playing after closing app

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Double click on an mp3 file and launch Rhythmbox player.

Listen to the audio stream for a few seconds or minutes, then click on
the X of the window to close the app.

Note the audio continues to play even though the GUI window is closed.

A closer inspection with System Monitor (see attached screenshots - 2)
reveals that the app is still running as pid 4251.
