You have been subscribed to a public bug:
On a stock Ubuntu 12.10, with gnome-shell installed from the package
manager, ligthdm fails to launch a gnome-shell session: the system only
display an empty background.
If switching to a tty, and manually starting gnome-shell (simply with $
gnome-shell), it runs normally.
Tested on a Lenovo Thinkpad T430s.
Reproductible: always
