I hate to dig up an old report, but I am also encountering a nearly identical issue using Natty and Gstreamer running the video with "gst- launch playbin uri=file:///path/to/file" produces the same or a similar rendering error in which the frame is torn.
This happens more often (or is more noticeable) on lower resolution video. I am getting this issue both with the nVidia proprietary drivers on a GTX460 and open sources drivers on an Intel Chipset (Core i3 era) when the graphics card is removed. ** Attachment added: "GStreamBug416368.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/416368/+attachment/2443685/+files/GStreamBug416368.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to totem in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/416368 Title: Horizontal lines during playback Status in “totem” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: totem I get horizontal lines during playback movies in totem, with and without compiz . It's not about interlaced video, but lines caused by frequency. I try with 'sync to v-blank', set frequency to 60Hz in compiz and playback is little bit better, but lines are still there and with sync to v-blank enabled I get performance regression in compiz. I'm not sure this is a totem issue or video driver bug, but is very annoying.
