Screen resolution too low and missing launcher when connected to HDTV
via HDMI

Bug description:
I just unplugged my HDMI cable which was connected to the HDTV and the
resolution was restored to its highest without my doing anything and
the Launcher reappeared.
Time for more experimentation.
